Outlook
The outlook for individuals with CP is difficult to tell. Most people with CP with proper therapy can lead to near normal lives. Even those with severe CP can improve their condition significantly, even though they will never be able to live independently.
The medical complications that arise through this disorder depend on the severity of the disorder. In general, the more severe the CP, the more likely that related conditions such as seizures and mental retardation occur in individuals with CP. It is also noted that individuals with diplegia or hemiplegia are much less likely to suffer from these related conditions compared to quadriplegia.
Another common problem that is seen is obesity in children who are confined to wheel chair or unable to freely move. And if this is not controlled could lead to morbid obesity, which itself brings its health risks.
Although the severity of CP does not change over the age, the relative conditions associated with this disorder do wax and wane over time.
Life expectancy in people with CP is also related to severity of their CP. It is found that individuals with mild form of CP have typically same life expectancy as the general population. Although those with more severe type of CP have a shorter life span, especially if they have numerous medical complications.
